March's Topic: History of the Library
Discover the story of the Fort Collins library, from its 19th-century beginnings in small community reading rooms to the Carnegie Library and today’s Poudre River Public Library District. This talk will explore how books, buildings, and civic ambition shaped one of Fort Collins’ most enduring public institutions.
We will also be marking an important milestone at this event. It was 50 years ago that the Fort Collins Library moved out of the Carnegie Building and into what we know today as the Old Town Library. What an auspicious opportunity for the Historical Society to be reflecting on the history of this important local institution.
In 2026, the United States turns 250 and Colorado celebrates 150 years of statehood. To mark these historic milestones, the Fort Collins Historical Society presents Living in History, a yearlong series exploring how our city’s past continues to shape its present and future.
Each talk will spotlight a different chapter in Fort Collins’ story—from civil rights and citizen activism to urban growth and transportation. We’ll trace how everyday residents, through bold movements and quiet contributions alike, have helped build the community we call home. As we reflect on where we’ve been and imagine what’s ahead, we invite you to join us in Living in History.
These presentations are free and open to the public. Bring a friend!
