Program Description

Event Details

Ever wondered what the Coroner actually does? This session offers a clear, accessible look inside the death investigation process, from the scene to the autopsy to family aftercare. Come and learn, ask questions, and better understand this essential public service.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Although the Coroner is an elected official in many jurisdictions, many people do not know who the Coroner is or what their involvement in local government is. The Coroner’s Office is a vital component of everyday life, and many times people find out who we are in the worst of circumstances. This presentation is not only an introduction, but also an in-depth look at death investigations and what the role of the Coroner and the Coroner’s Office is. This presentation is meant to educate the community and provide better knowledge of the process. We will look at the state statutes we abide by, the initial call, the difference between the law enforcement agency and the Coroner’s office responsibilities, the scene investigation, documenting the scene, what constitutes a Coroner’s case vs a Non-Coroner’s case, the autopsy process, the timeframe for results and myths, and finally the aftercare for grieving loved ones (Family Advocacy). We will have a Q&A session afterwards.

Light snacks and drinks provided.
