Registration opens today for the February 11 event: Free to Read. The Free to Read Book Club is perfect for high school students and adults interested in exploring banned and challenged books.
February's discussion will be about Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. This graphic memoir recounts the author's childhood in Tehran during and after the Islamic Revolution, and explores the contradictions of daily life while her country is at war.
The New York Times listed Persepolis as one of the best 100 books of the 21st century. Persepolis remains banned in Iran, and it has been banned or challenged in several US school districts. It was the second most banned or challenged book in the US in 2014, according to the American Library Association.
