Registration opens today for the April 29 event: Free to Read. The Free to Read Book Club is perfect for high school students and adults interested in exploring banned and challenged books.
April's discussion will be about Punching the Air, which tells the story of sixteen year old Amal Shahid, an artist and poet who has been falsely convicted and sent to prison.
Co-written by Ibi Zoboi, an award winning author, and Yusef Salaam, a prison reform activist and one of the Exonerated Five, this novel in verse has received multiple awards and starred reviews. It has also been challenged in several school districts, and the story itself centers around intellectual freedom and access to art and literature within prisons.
